YARMOUTH — The defense remains a work in progress, but the Cape Elizabeth boys’ lacrosse team showed Wednesday night it still can score goals.

Six players scored as Cape rolled to an impressive 15-5 victory over Yarmouth.

It was only the second game of the season for both teams, who last met in the 2015 state final with the Capers winning 7-5 at Fitzpatrick Stadium.

This game was relatively close for three quarters before Cape scored eight goals in the fourth.

“They had to come out and pressure some more, and that’s when the slides are a little bit farther apart and we’re able to run by some guys,” Cape Elizabeth Coach Ben Raymond said. “We did a little bit better job of finishing in the fourth quarter.”

Three of last season’s top defenders graduated but the relatively inexperienced long sticks did a good job of keeping the Clippers on the periphery. Yarmouth was scoreless for nearly 16 minutes during a stretch that began in the second quarter and ended in the third.

“It’s the second real game of the year and we ran a bunch of people in and out of the game,” Raymond said. “They’re still trying to figure it out.”

Alex Narvaez made 11 saves for Cape.

Cape led 6-3 at halftime after Owen Thoreck and Joe Boeschenstein scored less than 20 seconds apart in the last minute.

“That was a momentum shift,” Yarmouth Coach David Pearl said.

Ricky Tillotson won 9 of 11 draws in the first half but the Clippers were unable to take advantage.

Yarmouth had possession for nearly five minutes at the start of the second quarter but was only able to score once, when Bill Jacobs put in a left-handed shot from 10 yards on the right side to make it 3-3. The Clippers got the ball right back when Tillotson won yet another draw but lost possession two minutes later.

The Capers led 3-2 after the first quarter and took the lead when Connor Thoreck put a wrap-around shot into the right side while Cape played with a two-man advantage.

“We played really competitive in the first half,” Pearl said. “Against a good team like Cape Elizabeth, it you don’t capitalize on those opportunities they don’t show up again.”

Connor Thoreck led Cape with four goals. Boeschenstein and Riley Pillsbury each scored three. R.J. Sarka and Owen Thoreck had two goals each.

Jacobs led Yarmouth with three goals. Matt Beatty and Silas Chappell also scored.

“I saw a lot of great things out of this team tonight, and I’m looking forward to playing (Cape Elizabeth) in a month,” Pearl said.
