BINGHAMTON, N.Y. — While Portland continued its struggles Wednesday night, a former Sea Dog was extending his strong start.

Derrik Gibson led off the first inning with a double and gave the Binghamton Mets all the offense they needed by scoring on the next batter in a 6-0 win over the Sea Dogs.

Gibson, who played all of the 2012 and 2013 seasons and most of 2014 in Portland, reached base four out of five times with two hits and two walks.

“We’re getting great at-bats from Gibson,” said Binghamton Manager Pedro Lopez.

The Sea Dogs lineup could use some quality at-bats. The team has been shut out four times and has scored just seven runs total while losing seven straight. Even the last win by Portland was a 1-0 decision.

Following their eighth straight road loss, the Sea Dogs have a much-needed day off Thursday before starting a homestand Friday at 6 p.m. against the Reading Phillies. They have the EL’s worst record at 6-15.

After three seasons in Portland, the 26-year-old Gibson is with his third organization in the last three years.

Gibson, a former second-round draft pick, spent seven seasons with the Boston Red Sox organization. He hit .302 for the Sea Dogs in 85 games in 2014 and was a mid-season Eastern League All-Star.

The All-Star honor earned Gibson his first shot at Triple-A. He also split last season between Double-A and Triple-A in the Baltimore organization before signing with the New York Mets on Jan. 29 as a minor-league free agent.

“We like the at-bats,” Lopez said after moving Gibson from third in the order to leading off for the fourth time this year. “We like the way he’s been swinging the bat.

“He’s a young player, but he’s also a guy who’s been around a while. He’s got good plate discipline. … He’s going to keep hitting leadoff until something else happens.”

Gibson raised his average to a team-best .308. He shares the team lead with 10 runs scored while splitting time between shortstop and third base, where he was Wednesday.

“That was the plan coming in,” Lopez said. “He could get some time at second base, too.”

Binghamton’s Tyler Pill (1-2) stranded four runners in the first two innings, then allowed just one more hit. He worked eight innings, giving up four hits and a walk while striking out seven.

Kelly Secrest gave up consecutive walks with one out in the scoreless ninth, but also struck out two in the inning.

The top six hitters in the Sea Dogs order combined to go 1 for 20.

Wednesday’s troubles also extended to the defense. Second baseman Wendell Rijo doubled in the top of the first, but committed errors on two simple plays in the bottom of the inning, leading to three unearned runs.

First baseman Jordan Weems botched a routine ground ball in the eighth to allow another run.
