BIDDEFORD — Kirsten Lebreux scattered four hits and allowed one unearned run to lead Biddeford to a 5-1 victory against South Portland in an SMAA softball game Friday.

“I think that I have definitely improved from the first game to now,” said Lebreux, who struck out seven and walked one.

She was perfect the first time through the order before allowing two hits in the fourth inning, stranding them both.

“(Lebreux) pitched a great game today,” said Biddeford Coach Ray Magnant.

The game was scoreless until the bottom of the third when Brook Davis of Biddeford (3-1) competed through a 10-pitch at-bat to earn a one-out bases- loaded walk.

South Portland pitcher Stephanie Aceto escaped that inning, allowing just the one run.

“We’re not hitting the ball the way we should,” said Magnant. “Early on we had so many chances, so many chances with baserunners, we’re just not getting the big hits.”

Biddeford then pulled away with four runs on five hits in the fourth.

“I was getting a little nervous I guess with (the tight score) and it definitely felt like the game started to move a little quicker after we scored those runs,” said Lebreux.

Erin Martin led off the inning with a line drive off the third baseman, resulting in a double. She scored on a single to left by Lebreux.

Later in the inning, Brittany Roy singled to left-center to score Davis, making it 3-0.

Two batters later, Charlotte White singled to left, scoring Roy. On the play, an errant throw went over the catcher’s head, also allowing Grace Martin to score and make it 5-0.

“We should be doing that every inning. We’re that good of a team, I think, that when we have people on base, we can run and we can hit with the best of them,” said Magnant.

Biddeford stole five bases, two by Erin Martin.

Aceto allowed five runs, three earned, on eight hits for the Red Riots (1-3).

“Stephanie is a real good pitcher. She mixes up her pitches well. She kept us off balance,” said Magnant.

Aceto walked three and struck out five, and also had two hits.

“I think Steph pitched probably one of her best games of the year,” said South Portland Coach Alexis Garrison.

South Portland scored with two outs in the seventh on a Biddeford error.

“We’ve been struggling with our bats the first couple games. This was probably one of the better games that we’ve hit,” said Garrison. “We just couldn’t get the bunt down and couldn’t produce the runs that we needed today, unfortunately. We definitely have a lot of stuff to work on.”
