FALMOUTH — Unbeaten Falmouth flexed its offensive muscle to run away with a 21-10 win against South Portland in a boys’ lacrosse game Saturday afternoon.

The Yachtsmen thoroughly dominated the Red Riots to run their record to 3-0. Falmouth has already scored 50 goals, reaching double figures in all three games.

“It’s just a lot of work in practice,” said Jack Scribner, a junior attackman who had six goals and three assists against the Red Riots. “We work harder than any team I’ve ever seen, and it’s showing right now on the field.”

Spencer Pierce, a sophomore middie, won 20 of 28 faceoffs. He said a lot of his success was due to the work of wing players Jack Engleburger, Brendan Hickey and Riley Reed.

“I’d probably only win one or two out of 40 (faceoffs) if they weren’t there,” he said.

Falmouth’s continued possession of the ball kept it away from South Portland’s potent offense and stretched its defense.

“Their goals were so hard to come by because we were winning the faceoffs,” Falmouth Coach Mike Lebel said. “Every time we touched the ball we were being fairly successful offensively, so (they) had to start extending (their) defense, which opened up some looks. They started to take some chances defensively, and we were able to capitalize on that. We were able to move the ball.”

South Portland, two-time defending Class A South champion (previously Western Class A), dropped to 1-2.

“It’s an embarrassing loss,” South Portland Coach Tom Fiorini said. “I don’t think (we’ve) suffered a loss like that in four or five years.”

The Yachtsmen held an 8-3 lead at the end of the first half, then scored six goals in less than three minutes at the end of the third quarter to open a 20-7 lead.

Most of the fourth quarter was played with the clock running.

“We struggled at the faceoff circle and we struggled on defense,” Fiorini said. “I’m not sure who those guys on defense were, but that wasn’t my team.”

George Gilbert added five goals and two assists for the Yachtsmen. Devin Russell contributed four goals and two assists, and Lou Mainella had three goals and two assists. Jared Nolan, Brendan Hickey and Nick Farnham each scored a goal, George Fitzgerald recorded three assists, and Bryce Henson had an assist.

“I think we can very good,” Scribner said. “If we keep working really hard, buying into the program, listening to the coach, the sky’s the limit.”

Syracuse University-bound Jack Fiorini led South Portland with four goals. Finn Zechman and freshman Cooper Mehlhorn each scored two goals, and Mitchell Adams and Jake Angell each had a goal.

“Offensively, when we touched the ball we scored,” Fiorini said, “but we didn’t have it enough to really know.”

CORRECTION: This story has been updated to note that Finn Zechman scored two goals for South Portland.
