Atletico Madrid reaches Champions League final
A goal from Antoine Griezmann sent Atletico Madrid to the Champions League final for the second time in three seasons Tuesday despite a 2-1 defeat at Bayern Munich.
Atletico, which lost to city rival Real Madrid in the 2014 final, progressed on the away goals rule with an aggregate score of 2-2 after winning the first leg of their semifinal in Madrid, 1-0.
Atletico will play Manchester City or Real Madrid in the May 28 final in Milan. Their first leg finished 0-0 last week in Manchester, with the return match Wednesday in Madrid.
PREMIER LEAGUE: Coach Claudio Ranieri said he’s sticking with Leicester’s title-winning blueprint and the club won’t be in the market for established, expensive talent in the offseason.
FOOTBALL
NFL: Tom Brady’s lawyers will get another two weeks to appeal his Deflategate suspension.
The 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Manhattan said Brady could have until May 23 to decide whether to ask for a rehearing in front of the same three-judge panel or a new hearing – called “en banc” – in front of the entire circuit.
• Pro Football Hall of Fame coach Don Shula, 86, was admitted to a hospital for treatment of fluid retention and sleep apnea.
OLYMPICS
COMMISSION ESTABLISHED: Rio de Janeiro’s city council set up a commission to investigate whether the city’s Olympic projects were tarnished by corruption.
The five-member commission is expected to request contracts and other documents related to the stadiums, highways and other projects built for the Aug. 5-21 games.
GOLF
CINK LEAVING: Stewart Cink, a former British Open champion said he’s taking a break from golf after learning his wife has breast cancer.
Cink posted the news on Twitter, saying the family is still in the process of figuring out “what she is fighting, and the uncertainty is difficult.”
TENNIS
MADRID MASTERS: Rafael Nadal easily defeated Andrey Kuznetsov 6-3, 6-3 to reach the third round, and Andy Murray advanced after a hard-fought 7-6, 3-6, 6-1 win over 37-year-old Radek Stepanek.
Nadal broke Kuznetsov’s serve once in the first set and twice in the second to secure the win in his opening match at the clay-court tournament that he’s won twice in the last three seasons.
COLLEGE
BASKETBALL: A Louisville, Kentucky, judge dismissed a lawsuit by University of Louisville students filed against Katina Powell that said the escort’s book allegations of sex parties at the men’s basketball players’ dormitory had devalued their education.
Kyle Hornback and three other students sued Powell last fall, saying her book damaged the school’s reputation. Jefferson County Circuit Court Judge Mitch Perry denied their argument but allowed others who joined the suit after being named in the book to file amended complaints that they were falsely accused and defamed.
SWIMMING
INSTRUCTOR BANNED: Joe Bernal, a former Harvard and Fordham swim instructor, was banned from coaching for life by USA Swimming, which said he violated sexual misconduct policies adopted to protect athletes.
