The Woolwich town meeting will be at 9 a.m. Saturday.

When I was a child growing up in Woolwich, my parents used to take my brothers and me to town meeting every year. We were taught the importance of getting involved in our town. It is one day out of the year that our votes can make the difference in the daily lives of the people in our town.

I have attended most of the Woolwich Board of Selectmen meetings this past year. I’ve seen and heard things that make me sick to my stomach. Our selectmen would like us to think they are the town government. Woolwich people are the town government. They were voted in to represent us.

We voted by a large margin in November to get rid of “pay as you throw.” The selectmen are making us vote on it again at town meeting. They want us to think it is because of a petition, but they got rid of that petition. They have written their own warrant article for us to vote on. They have clearly ignored the will of the people for their own agenda. We can’t trust them.

The town office has a year’s worth of “pay as you throw” bags left over. An offer to purchase the bags, at cost, was refused. The bags were bought with taxpayers’ money. That money needs to be put back in the budget; we shouldn’t be asked to buy the bags again.

There are other warrant articles we need to question, too. Woolwich people need to pack town meeting and take our town back. We all have busy lives, but it could be one of the most important days of the year.

Please attend town meeting. Your vote counts. Get there early for parking and checking in. See you there.
