From staff reports

A two-car crash on Route 1 in Wiscasset killed a Bristol woman and slowed traffic for hours Friday afternoon, according to the Maine Department of Transportation.

The accident near the Woolwich town line occurred when a Volkswagen Jetta heading north crossed the centerline and struck a southbound Lincoln Town Car driven by Henry Barstow of Bristol. Barstow’s passenger, Alice Barstow, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The identification of the driver of the Jetta, who was injured, was being withheld Friday afternoon, pending notification of family members.

Henry Barstow and the driver of the Jetta were taken by Wiscasset and Bath Fire Department emergency crews to Maine Medical Center in Portland. Their conditions were not immediately known, according to Wiscasset police.

Police detoured northbound motorists to Mountain Road, then back to Route 1 while they worked at the scene.

The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office is conducting a reconstruction of the crash. The road was later reopened to traffic.

Wiscasset police were also assisted by the Maine Marine Patrol, Sagadahoc County Sheriff’s Office, Portland Police Department, Wiscasset Fire & EMS, Bath Fire Department, Woolwich Fire & EMS, Lincoln County Communications and the Lincoln County District Attorney’s Office.
