The tone was set early Sunday afternoon, and it was not good for the Portland Sea Dogs.

Portland starter Ty Buttrey gave up five singles and two walks in the first inning. The Binghamton Mets scored four runs and went on to an 8-1 victory at Hadlock Field.

Buttrey (0-6) left the game after allowing two singles to begin the second inning.

Despite his record, Buttrey had not been pitching terrible this year. Until his previous start, he never allowed more than three earned runs. But he gave up four last week in New Hampshire, and four more Sunday.

“He couldn’t command his pitches,” Sea Dogs Manager Carlos Febles said. “Everything was all over the place. The hitters were patient until he threw strikes, and they made him pay,”

Buttrey, a fourth-round draft pick in 2012 and ranked Boston’s 18th-best prospect by Baseball America, saw his ERA rise to 5.86.

Reliever Rob Wort followed Buttrey and helped save the bullpen, allowing one run in four innings. Binghamton scored three runs off Williams Jerez in the sixth, including a Maikis De La Cruz solo home run.

Mets starter Casey Delgado (1-1), in his second Double-A start, made a nice rebound from his first start, in which he allowed five runs in four innings at Reading. He held the Sea Dogs to five hits and one unearned run over six innings.

Portland scored in the sixth when Henry Ramos reached on an infield error, advanced to third on Aneury Tavarez’s single and an outfield error, and scored on Nate Freiman’s sacrifice fly.

Portland dropped to 13-25, while the Mets left with a 16-19 record.
