SACO — Louisa Colucci and Libby Pomerleau led Thornton Academy to a 2-1 win over Windham in an SMAA softball game Monday, snapping the Eagles’ 11-game winning streak.

Colucci pitched all seven innings, scattering six hits.

“(Colucci) was hitting spots, pounding the strike zone. Our girls couldn’t lay off that rise ball,” said Windham Coach Travis Demmons. “She pitched a great game, tip of the hat to her.”

The sophomore struck out seven and did not walk a batter.

“The key for Louisa is that she didn’t walk anybody, so no extra baserunners,” said Thornton Coach John Provost.

“I pitched a good game and I relied on my defense most of the time. They played really good, they had an error-free game,” said Colucci.

On the other side, Windham (11-2) committed four errors.

Pomerleau played an excellent all-around game at second base and at the plate.

With the score tied at 1-1, Pomerleau led off the third inning with a ground-rule double to center field that came within a few feet of being a home run.

The next batter, Hayden Campbell, hit a groundball to shortstop. Pomerleau held at second and took off for third immediately on the shortstop’s throw to first. The subsequent throw from first to third skipped past the third baseman, allowing Pomerleau to score.

“(Pomerleau) is one of the fastest kids on the team and she’s just very smart. Smart baserunner,” said Provost.

Colucci retired the first two batters in the seventh, but Megan Joy kept Windham alive by ripping a single up the middle. Taylor Tibbetts followed with a hit down the right-field line, moving Joy to third.

Tibbetts stole second on the first pitch to Katie Hunter. On a 2-1 pitch, Hunter hit a hard grounder that appeared to be headed through the hole on the right side.

“I saw (the ball) and knew I could get to it, so I was just going to make sure that it didn’t get by me,” said Pomerleau. “I was like: I’m going to stop this no matter what, whether I have to stop it with my face or whatever.”

Pomerleau showed off her incredible range, sliding to her left to snatch the grounder and flip to first for the final out.

“(Pomerleau) is great, has tremendous range. Just a tremendous athlete,” said Provost.

The loss was the first for Windham since its season opener – a 12-6 defeat against Biddeford on April 25.

“We’ll just come back to practice tomorrow and start a new streak on Wednesday,” said Demmons, whose team dropped to fifth place in the Class A South Heal rankings, one spot behind Thornton.

Thornton (10-4) got on the board in the second inning when Jenica Botting reached on an infield single, driving home Maizie Lee from third.

Windham tied the game in the top of the third when Alexandra Morang scored on a single up the middle by Lauren Talbot.

Danielle Tardiff took the tough-luck loss for Windham, allowing seven hits while striking out five without a walk.
