Re: Dana Milbank’s May 19 column, “Sanders ought to know better than try winning by intimidation”:

Bravo to Bernie Sanders for not being cowed by the Democratic establishment over the events at the Nevada state convention. He has thoroughly condemned the violence and threats, as expected. He also has enough respect for his ideals and supporters to acknowledge that their anger is valid.

In their zeal to crown the candidate they decided on four years ago, the Democrats have been dismissive of Sanders from Day One. Had he gotten the unbiased attention he deserved all along, he would now have even more pledged delegates than the remarkable number he has managed to acquire so far.

I hope the Democratic superdelegates come to their senses in time to prevent a President Trump. It is Bernie – not Hillary Clinton, with all her baggage – who can beat Donald Trump. Bernie has drawn in millions of new voters, and appeals to independents, blue-collar workers and everyone who cares deeply about the 99 percent.

Clinton personifies the political status quo – she’s unquestionably beholden to the rich and powerful. That is not selling well. Before it’s too late, I hope the superdelegates listen to and learn from the many enthusiastic people of all ages, ethnicities and backgrounds who want a president they can trust to work for them.

Bernie’s focus on economic and social justice will be the future of the country, with or without the blessings of the Democratic Party.
