The Portland City Council approved licenses Monday for service industry businesses ranging from breweries and distilling companies to bars and nightclubs.

Among the 22 Portland-based businesses that received licenses were some of the city’s best-known breweries, including Shipyard Brewing, D.L. Geary Brewing Co., Foundation Brewing Co., Maine Mead Works, Austin Street Brewery and Allagash Brewing Co.

Councilors also spent time at Monday’s meeting debating whether the Portland Public Art Committee should commission a local artist to create a street lamp sculpture at Woodfords Corner.

During the sculpture discussion, City Councilor Edward Suslovic said, “One thing is clear. Portlanders take their art, food and drink very seriously.”
