The city of Portland has hired a Philadelphia firm to redesign a public park on Congress Street that was saved by a 2014 referendum vote.
Portland will pay Wallace Roberts & Todd $79,500 to develop a new design for Congress Square Park at the corner of Congress and High streets. A spokeswoman for the city says the money is contingent on the city’s receipt of National Endowment for the Arts grant funds.
The city is also in the process of selecting an artist who will create a concept for public art in the park. Finalists are expected to be announced in June.
The city wanted to sell most of the half-acre park to a hotel owner but voters decided to protect it.
