Brunswick residents approved a roughly $37.7 million school budget on Tuesday and decided to continue holding referendum votes on future school spending plans.

The school budget passed 917-400. When combined with the municipal budget already approved by Town Council members, the budget will result in a roughly 3.5 percent property tax increase for town residents. The Brunswick School Board trimmed more than $400,000 from the proposed school budget in response to a request from the Town Council last month. School spending has been a point of contention between the council and board for some time.

In a related vote, Brunswick residents voted 930-380 to continue submitting school budgets to a town-wide referendum for the next three years.

Brunswick voters also approved Democratic and Republican primary candidates for local seats in the Legislature. All of the candidates were running unopposed in their respective primaries.
