Residents of the midcoast towns comprising Regional School Unit 1 approved a $28.2 million budget on Tuesday.

Results posted by the school district Wednesday morning show the budget was approved 1,032 to 313.

Voters supported the budget in each of the member communities: Bath, Woolwich, Phippsburg and Arrowsic.

The $28.2 million budget for the 2016-17 year represents a 3.39 percent increase over the previous year’s budget. The additional expenditures in this year’s budget would pay for, among other things, a new middle school foreign language teacher, lacrosse and robotics programs at the middle school level and additional nursing services in elementary schools.

Voters in the district also supported continuing to require school budgets to be validated by referendum for three more years.
