You have to hand it to our president, the Democrats and the media for artfully changing the subject regarding a terrorist’s shoot-up of an Orlando nightclub.

According to all of the above, an “assault rifle” walked into the club and began slaughtering the occupants. No one with an ideological or religious agenda was behind that rifle. No, it was just another one of those out-of-control guns that have to be banned if we’re to make America safe again.

As usual, columnist Bill Nemitz (“Assault rifle owners have some growing up to do,” June 16) starts shooting from the hip without aim or reason and targets the real culprits: “white men (who) consider it their God-given right to play with the same types of guns that the real-life soldiers do.”

The Fort Hood, San Bernardino and Orlando mass murderers were not “white,” but they did have an ideological cause for which they were willing to murder. Yet the misguided motivation for their mayhem is not blamed on a perverted form of Islam, which the Islamic State (also called ISIS or ISIL) is promoting through the internet and other media. It’s all about the guns!

Blaming guns takes the spotlight away from the threat that the Western civilized cultures are facing from ISIS ideology. It removes the charge that our president is failing to lead a real coalition of nations against ISIS and destroying their aura of invincibility, which motivates so many “lone wolves” to succumb to their propaganda and kill innocent civilians.

That ISIS continues to exist and thereby continues to terrorize civilized countries of the world is the real tragedy. But let’s not talk about that. Let’s talk about banning guns. That takes the rightful spotlight away from our feckless president and his mediocre measures to “contain” ISIS instead of obliterating it and its pervasive influence on potential terrorists.
