BAR HARBOR, Maine — The U.S. Coast Guard has rescued seven kayakers who became stranded on an island off Bar Harbor.
Officials say the kayakers were on a guided tour Sunday afternoon when high winds prevented them from returning to shore. Instead, they took refuge at the nearest island, Burnt Porcupine Island.
A Coast Guard boat arrived at the island and took the kayakers back to Bar Harbor. No one was injured.
Chief Petty Officer David Lebrecht says the kayakers were “smart to call it quits” once the weather changed “instead of pushing on against the elements.”
