BOSTON — Sean O’Sullivan paused, smiled briefly and admitted he was thinking about how impressive the Los Angeles Angels’ hitters looked a night earlier.

O’Sullivan held the Angels scoreless into the sixth inning and Boston’s offense put up seven runs with two outs in the fifth, and the Red Sox rebounded from a drubbing by beating the Angels 10-5 Sunday.

A day after Boston lost 21-2 and allowed 22 hits, O’Sullivan (2-0) allowed two runs and four hits in five innings. Signed to a minor league contract in December, the 28-year-old right-hander was recalled from Triple-A before the game to make his third start with Boston.

“You’re watching and you say: ‘Hopefully they got them all out last night,’ ” O’Sullivan said.

Hanley Ramirez and Sandy Leon hit two-run doubles as Boston scored its seven in the fifth.

“A good bounce-back win. A much needed series win,” Red Sox Manager John Farrell said. “It was good to see us go out and set the tone with Sully on the mound.”

O’Sullivan didn’t allow a runner to reach third in the first five innings and was replaced by Matt Barnes after consecutive singles opening the sixth. Kole Calhoun and Albert Pujols hit RBI doubles around Mike Trout’s run-scoring single.

Ramirez had three hits and Leon drove in three for the Red Sox, who took two of three from Los Angeles.

Matt Shoemaker (3-9) allowed five runs and nine hits in 42/3 innings.

“He just had a little trouble, obviously, getting out of the fifth,” Angels Manager Mike Scioscia said. “But one pitch here or there and he’s got a little different outcome to his outing.”

Yunel Escobar had four hits and two RBI for the Angels, who have lost 11 of 13. C.J. Cron went hitless in four at-bats after going 6 for 6 with two homers and five RBI in Saturday’s win.

Shoemaker came in just 1-3 in his last eight starts but had a 1.87 ERA.

“It’s almost all for naught after that fifth,” he said.

David Ortiz’s RBI double to the triangle in center pushed the Red Sox in front. Ramirez followed with his slicing hit to right before scoring on Jackie Bradley Jr.’s single for a 4-0 lead.

Jose Alvarez gave up Leon’s double off the Green Monster. Leon scored when left fielder Jefry Marte overran the ball for an error on Marco Hernandez’s single.

NOTES: Bradley made a running over-the-shoulder catch on Escobar’s drive in the third and doubled up Jett Bandy at second for an inning-ending double play. … Red Sox third baseman Travis Shaw was given the day off. Hernandez started in his place and had two singles. … Rick Porcello (9-2) looks to remain unbeaten this season at Fenway Park when Boston hosts Texas on Monday. Porcello is 6-0 in seven starts.
