A South Portland man died Saturday afternoon during a visit to Acadia National Park after swimming across Echo Lake, a park spokesman said Sunday.

Nathan Savage, 39, was visiting the park with his wife and children when he collapsed around 3 p.m. while sitting on a rock at Ikes Point, said John Kelly, the park spokesman.

Savage’s wife performed CPR on her husband and another park visitor called for help, Kelly said. Park rangers, Mount Desert police officers and paramedics responded, but Savage died at the scene, Kelly said.

The state medical examiner’s office is expected to conduct an autopsy to determine the cause of Savage’s death, Kelly said.

Echo Lake is off Route 102 on the western side of Mount Desert Island, just south of Somesville and north of Southwest Harbor.
