I am flabbergasted by the Republican Party trying to hang something, anything, on Hillary Clinton and smear her record.

In recent days we have heard that the eighth panel investigating the 2012 terrorist attack on the U.S. Mission in Benghazi, Libya, has found that then-Secretary of State Clinton did nothing wrong.

And FBI Director James Comey has stated that Clinton (now the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee) was “extremely careless” with her emails but that he would recommend no criminal charges.

In the first place, why would Clinton be responsible for the deaths of Ambassador Chris Stevens and three private contractors in the Benghazi attack? Why was she even being investigated when it was the CIA running operations in Benghazi?

And at the order of the Republican Party, Comey, the FBI director, testified last week before the House Oversight Committee regarding his findings on the Clinton emails, while Attorney General Loretta Lynch is scheduled to appear Tuesday before the House Judiciary Committee.

Where was this rabid Republican Party when President George W. Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney refused to testify under oath before the 9/11 Commission? Where was the Republican Party when CIA operative Valerie Plame was exposed and Cheney’s chief of staff, Scooter Libby, was convicted of obstruction of justice? Where was the Republican Party when Cheney shot a hunting companion in the face? Where was that investigation?

The Republican Party has become just as phony and spurious as their presumptive presidential nominee. This whole fiasco with Benghazi and the emails is pure politics, and I sure hope people can see through it.

There is a reason why Gallup has found that only 26 percent of U.S. adults identify as Republican.
