The Westbrook Planning Board will consider a proposed retail development called Dirigo Plaza at its meeting Tuesday.
A Wal-Mart store has been announced as an anchor tenant at the 11.5-acre shopping plaza off Interstate 95 at Main Street and Larrabee Road.
The project wuuld include two large retail buildings and several smaller retail and restaurant buildings, with a total of nearly 500,000 square feet of retail space. The proposed development is located across from Westbrook Crossing, a shopping plaza anchored by Kohl’s department store.
A quarry owned by Pike Industries currently occupies the site of the proposed development.
Developer Jeffrey Gove has said he plans to turn the quarry into a lake open to the public and surrounded by walking trails that would link to trail systems in Portland.
The planning board will hold a public hearing on the proposal and consider site plan approval. The meeting will be held at 7 p.m. at Westbrook High School Room 114.
Some residents opposed a Wal-Mart coming into the community, and successfully fought back a proposed Wal-Mart development in 2003.
