BANGOR – The federal government has issued a license to Bangor International Airport that allows the airport to provide refueling and services for flights headed to or coming from Cuba.
Sen. Susan Collins, a Maine Republican, pushed for Bangor to receive the license. She also has written a bill to allow U.S. airports to serve as transit stops.
Collins says foreign air carriers have had to bypass airports like Bangor International and go to Canadian airports instead. She says the change will make the Bangor airport more competitive and bring jobs to eastern Maine.
Airport director Anthony Caruso says the rule change will level the playing field with Canadian airports. Passengers will not disembark the plane during the transit stops.
