We Mainers can make our elections more democratic.

Ranked-choice voting allows more voices to be heard and the top candidate to win with a majority, rather than the plurality we have seen in recent elections.

There are many political philosophies beyond Republicans and Democrats. We deserve the opportunity to learn their positions and make our preferences known. Voters can agree with positions in many parties’ platforms and distinguish choices among them.

Vote counting in ranked-choice elections may be rather more time-consuming than our current method but gets us to a more democratic result. A runoff election featuring the top two candidates is more expensive and time-consuming for candidates and voters, and less democratic because fewer voters may go to the polls the second time around.
