KITTERY — Portsmouth Naval Shipyard has a new commander.

Capt. David S. Hunt formally assumed his duties Friday as the shipyard’s 85th commander. He replaces Capt. William Greene, who spent three years in command.

Vice Adm. Thomas Moore, the top officer at the Naval Sea Systems Command, was the keynote speaker. Other dignitaries in attendance included Sen. Kelly Ayotte of New Hampshire and the commander for the Navy’s mid-Atlantic region, Rear Adm. Jack Scorby Jr.

Greene’s tenure highlights include 10 major overhaul, repair and modernization projects and more than 100 smaller projects at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, Groton Connecticut, and San Diego.
