A Portland man was arrested in Cumberland early Monday morning after a police officer caught him breaking into a car.

A resident of the Foreside Road area called police around 3 a.m. to report a car burglary in progress. When Officer Scott Hendee arrived on the scene, he encountered a man who then took off running.

Hendee caught up to the man, who has been identified by police as 35-year-old Harry Charles Bishop.

Bishop was charged with burglary of a motor vehicle, refusing to submit to arrest and felony theft by unauthorized taking.
