Donald Trump apparently asked that a crying baby be removed from a rally in northern Virginia on Tuesday, although it was difficult to tell from media reports whether he was joking or serious.

A speech by Trump, the Republican presidential nominee, was interrupted by the wails of a child.

“Don’t worry about that baby, I love babies,” Trump said. “I hear that baby crying, I like it. What a beautiful baby.”

But when the baby continued to cry, Trump followed up by saying, “Actually, I was just kidding – you can get that baby out of here!”

The Associated Press reported that Trump then seemed to suggest that he was joking and that the baby could stay. The child soon stopped crying.

Other media outlets, however, quoted Trump as saying, “I think she really believed me that I love having a baby crying while I’m speaking. That’s okay. People don’t understand. That’s okay,” he said.
