Your recent editorial on Donald Trump’s outrageous remarks about the Somali population in Maine was much needed (Our View, Aug. 5). His vile, untruthful comments about immigrants are largely unwelcome here.

The editorial mentioned Officer Zahra Abu, a young Somali police officer in Portland. She was cited as an example of the many immigrants in Maine who are doing important jobs and contributing to the betterment of the state.

I’m pleased to know Officer Abu as a friend. She sent a copy of the editorial and remarked that she was on duty at Merrill Auditorium when Trump made his disgusting remarks. How ironic that she was there to protect a man who would be happy to send her back to Somalia. Zahra is a strong person and took it in stride, commenting that she even had to work overtime that day.
