A Clifton man was killed when the pickup truck he was a passenger in went off Route 202 in Unity on Tuesday night and struck a utility pole, state police said.

Harold Fickett III, 20, died at the scene in the 9 p.m. accident. Two others in the 2002 Dodge Dakota, including the driver, were injured. They were taken to Waldo County General Hospital in Belfast with injuries that weren’t believed to be life-threatening, according to the news release from state Department of Safety spokesman Steve McCausland. Details of their injuries, their names and conditions weren’t immediately available Wednesday morning.

Route 202 and Route 9, which is Bangor Road north of downtown Unity, were closed for several hours as police investigated the crash.

A chocolate Labrador retriever named Josie was also in the truck and fled the crash site, McCausland said.

State police ask anyone who sees the dog to call the public safety dispatch center in Augusta at 624-7076.
