WILLIAMSBURG, Mass. — The health board in a small Massachusetts town says it can’t order a resident to remove the “decorative” chemical toilets flanking his driveway despite the objections of neighbors who say they’re a health hazard and an eyesore.

The toilets at Chris Duval’s Williamsburg home are covered in orange paint that some say resembles graffiti. They are sealed shut and contain no chemicals.

Duval tells The Daily Hampshire Gazette the toilets are “empty fiberglass shells” that he finds “decorative.”

The board on Monday took no action on the toilets, often referred to by the brand-name Porta Potty, because the town has no bylaws regarding their regulation.

Opponents say the toilets are privies, but the town health agent says they do not meet the state definition of a “privy.”

Neighbors expressed disappointment.
