TAUNTON, Mass. — A Maine man is in critical condition at a Rhode Island hospital after a fatal crash involving three boats Saturday on a pond in Taunton, Massachusetts, according to a report from WCSH6-TV.
No names have been released, but the Bristol County District Attorney’s Office said a 39-year-old man from New Hampshire died and a 67-year-old man from Maine was in critical condition.
Another Maine man, 72, suffered minor injuries.
According to the district attorney’s office, the three men were operating speed boats and were competing in the Bill Giles Memorial Regatta on Watson Pond when they collided around 1 p.m.
The first boat, operated by the 72-year-old Mainer, spun out at 65 mph and caused a pileup. The second boat, operated by the deceased man, collided with the first. Then the third boat, operated by the Mainer now in critical condition, crashed into the second.
All three men were ejected from their boats but members of the Taunton Fire Department’s dive team were on scene and pulled all three s from the water.
Authorities said foul play is not suspected, and the investigation is ongoing.
