FRYEBURG — Nick Hansen and Evan Whitten each rushed for two touchdowns and Wells pulled away in the fourth quarter for a 35-18 win over Fryeburg Academy in a Class C South football game Saturday afternoon.

Hansen scored the only touchdown of the first half – a 10-yard run in the second quarter.

Wells (3-0) extended its lead to 14-0 in the third quarter on a 33-yard pass from Michael Wrigley to Deandre Woods, but Jared Chisari returned a kickoff 82 yards for Fryeburg’s first touchdown.

The teams combined for five touchdowns in the fourth quarter, including TD runs of 3 and 43 yards by Whitten. Oscar Saunders of Fryeburg (1-2) threw a 31-yard touchdown pass to Cobey Johnson, and Chisari returned another kickoff 75 yards for the game’s final points.

“They’re a very good football team,” Fryeburg Coach David Turner said of Wells. “We actually played pretty well, but when you make a mistake they make you pay for it.”

FREEPORT 27, GRAY-NEW GLOUCESTER 0: Josh Burke rushed for two touchdowns and passed for another as the Falcons (2-1) celebrated their Homecoming Day with a shutout victory against the Patriots (0-3).

The game was scoreless until late in the first half, when a blocked punt by Connor Dostie gave Freeport possession at the Gray-New Gloucester 12. Burke scored on a 4-yard run with 1:57 left in the half.

A fumble set up Burke’s second TD, a 3-yard run in the third. The Falcons then made it 21-0 when Dostie recovered a fumble in the end zone, one play after Dostie lost a fumble at the 1.

WINSLOW 40, MDI 20: Kenny Rickard’s 1-yard run capped a 17-play, 87-yard drive in the fourth quarter that lasted almost nine minutes and clinched the Black Raiders’ win over the Trojans (2-1) in Winslow.

It was the 25th straight win for Winslow (3-0), the two-time defending Class C state champion.

The teams combined for 602 rushing yards – 289 for MDI and 313 for Winslow. Each team had a pair of backs run for more than 100 yards – Colby Lee (142) and Croix Albee (103) for MDI, and Nate St. Amand (142) and Rickard (120) for Winslow.

The Trojans trailed only 27-20 at halftime but turned the ball over four times. A third-quarter fumble at midfield led to a 11-yard touchdown run by Rickard that made it 33-20.

Rickard also had an 8-yard run for the game’s first touchdown.

Albee rushed for two touchdowns for MDI.

MT. VIEW 41, MATTANAWCOOK 14: Devan Davis ran for 132 yards and a touchdown, helping the Mustangs (2-1) beat the Lynx (1-2) in Thorndike.

Colby Furrow added 87 rushing yards and a touchdown for Mt. View (2-1). He also returned a fumble 35 yards for a touchdown and had an interception.
