Bruins win preseason game against Philadelphia

Jake DeBrusk scored the deciding goal in a shootout as the Boston Bruins edged the host Philadelphia Flyers 4-3 in a preseason game Saturday.

David Pastrnak scored twice for Boston, including the goal that made it 3-3 with 3:12 remaining in the second period. David Backes had three assists playing his first game for the Bruins.

The Bruins have three preseason games left before they begin the regular season Oct. 16 at Columbus.

LPGA: Mi Jung Hur birdied the par-5 18th hole for a 6-under 67 and a one-stroke lead over Brooke Henderson on Saturday in the Reignwood LPGA Classic in Beijing.

OLYMPICS

2024 GAMES: IOC President Thomas Bach met with French athletes and Paris leaders of their 2024 bid at the start of a two-day visit in the French capital.

Paris is competing against Budapest and Los Angeles.

SOCCER

MLS: Kei Kamara and Juan Agudelo each had a goal and an assist in the rain to help host New England beat Sporting Kansas City 3-1.

New England (10-14-9) is in seventh place in the East – two points behind sixth-place Montreal for the final playoff spot.

TENNIS

WUHAN OPEN: Petra Kvitova overpowered Dominika Cibulkova 6-1, 6-1 to win her first title of the year.

The 14th-seeded Kvitova posted her fifth win over a top-20 player last week.

SHENZHEN OPEN: Defending champion Tomas Berdych fired nine aces and defeated Thomaz Bellucci 6-2, 7-5 in the semifinals. The top-seeded Czech faces Richard Gasquet in Sunday’s final.

TASHKENT OPEN: Kristyna Pliskova of the Czech Republic won her first WTA tournament, beating defending champion Nao Hibino of Japan 6-3, 2-6, 6-3 in the final in Uzbekistan.

Pliskova fired in 10 aces past the fourth-seeded Hibino.

BOXING

BOXER DIES: Scottish boxer Mike Towell died Friday after suffering bleeding and swelling to his brain during a televised fight in Glasgow on Thursday.

Towell, 25, had to be carried away on a stretcher after a fifth-round loss to Dale Evans.

Towell had been undefeated going into the fight – an eliminator for the British welterweight title – with 11 wins and one draw.

AWESOME AGAIN STAKES: California Chrome cruised to a 2.25-length victory in the $300,000 race at Santa Anita, California, improving to 6-0 this year as the front-runner for Horse of the Year honors.

PREP SCHOOLS

FIELD HOCKEY: Sydney Hopkins and Andrea Caradonna each scored two goals to lead Berwick Academy (3-3) to a 5-3 win over Beaver Country Day at Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts.

GIRLS’ SOCCER: Sallie Chope scored with 30 seconds left in the game to lift Beaver Country Day to a 1-0 win over visiting Berwick Academy.
