A state trooper who was put on administrative leave in September after he was charged with criminal mischief in Saco has been put back on duty and the charge has been dropped, the state police said.

Trooper Michael D. Lane, 28, of Lyman was summonsed by Saco police Sept. 2 at an address on Elijah Drive around 2 a.m., according to Saco police. Police did not provide a narrative of what led to the charge. State police spokesman Steve McCausland said the district attorney’s office in York county decided not to file charges, and Lane was returned to duty about two weeks ago. A message for the district attorney was not returned, and someone who answered the phone at the office in Biddeford said authorities are not required to explain why they choose not to pursue a charge.

Criminal mischief is a misdemeanor punishable by up to one year in jail, a fine of $2,000 or both.

According to state law, someone is guilty of criminal mischief if they intentionally, knowingly or recklessly damage or destroy someone else’s property.
