School color guard members to take part in Macy’s parade

Members of the Wells High School Color Guard have been selected to participate in the Macy’s Great American Marching Band in the 2016 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, Nov. 24 in New York City.

Students Bella White, Jessica Bacon and Mallory Cashman will travel to New Jersey and New York City on Nov. 18 for a week of rehearsals. Bacon will participate as a dancer, and White and Cashman will serve as flagbearers. This will be Cashman’s second time performing in the parade. Joining them are color guard coach Bailey Smith and chaperones Larry and Julie Downing.

Cancer Community Center names three to trustee board

The Cancer Community Center has appointed three new members to its board of trustees: Robin Haley, Karen Bradbury and Morgan Smith.

Haley is a social worker and the substance abuse prevention coordinator for the Falmouth School Department who coaches the Falmouth High School varsity field hockey team and manages the youth field hockey program. She also is an active member of the Casco Bay CAN (Create Awareness Now) Coalition, an organization that focuses on youth substance use prevention.

Bradbury is assistant vice president and head of global talent development at Unum. She also is an accomplished amateur photographer.

Smith is an audit manager at Baker Newman and Noyes of Portland who specializes in audits of commercial, manufacturing and nonprofit organizations.

Applications ready for Festival of Lights floats

Applications are now available for those wishing to enter a float in the annual Festival of Lights parade, set for Thanksgiving weekend.

Space in the parade is by reservation through the application process, and space is limited. The entry fee is $15.

Milliken Mills Trails Park has officially opened

The town of Old Orchard and the Old Orchard Beach Conservation Commission have officially opened Milliken Mills Trails Park, a 70-acre property off Portland Avenue, near Milliken Mills Road.

The park offers hiking and biking trails, educational information, a picnic area and parking with easy access to the Eastern Trail.

Much of the physical material was created and produced by students in Old Orchard Beach schools. Grade 4 students also created a website for the park at http://millikenmillstrails.weebly.com.

Volunteers sought to help people prepare tax returns

The AARP Foundation is seeking volunteers to provide tax aid to people who need assistance preparing their federal and state income tax returns .

Tax-Aide volunteers will receive training and continued support for a variety of roles at every level of experience. Volunteer tax preparers complete tax preparation training and IRS certification before working with taxpayers. There is also a need for grass-roots leadership, on-site greeters, those who can provide technical assistance and interpreters who can provide language assistance. The program is offered at 70 locations throughout Maine, including senior centers, libraries and other locations.

Alzheimer’s walk nets association $172,000

More than 750 residents from the Greater Portland area joined the Alzheimer’s Association’s Greater Portland Walk to End Alzheimer’s recently. Participants raised more than $172,000 to fund Alzheimer’s Association care, support and research programs. This was one of seven walks across Maine and a major contribution to the association’s statewide goal of $770,000. Fundraising efforts continue to Nov. 30.

School receives $2,500 grant for tuition assistance

Cornerspring Montessori School has received a $2,500 grant from the United Mid-Coast Charities to fund the school’s tuition assistance fund for low-income families.

Cornerspring offers programs for toddlers through elementary-age children, as well as programs for before school care, after school care and summer camp.

Bank taking submissions for video contest on saving

Norway Savings Bank is accepting submissions for its “Lights, Camera, Save!” video contest. The contest, organized by the American Bankers Association Foundation, is a national competition that encourages teens to use video to communicate the value of saving.

Students ages 13-18 must create a 90-second video on saving and using money wisely and submit a link to the video along with a completed entry form to the bank by the Dec. 1 deadline

Norway Savings Bank will host the first round of judging. The local winner will receive a $250 college scholarship and their video will be submitted to represent Norway Savings Bank on the national level for a prize up to $5,000. An additional scholarship is awarded for a teacher at their school to attend the 2017 Jump$tart National Educator Conference.

Animal shelters looking for donations of dry food

The Coastal Humane Society of Brunswick and the Lincoln County Animal Shelter of Edgecomb are seeking public donations of dry food for shelter cats and dogs through Saturday.

To sweeten the deal, two $25 L.L.Bean gift certificates will be awarded to individuals who donate the most cat food and the most dog food.

Dry food can be brought to any of the shelters’ three locations: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. through Friday at 190 Pleasant St., Brunswick; 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday, Tuesday and Thursday and until 6 p.m. Friday and Saturday at 30 Range Road, Brunswick; and from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday, Tuesday and Thursday-Saturday at 27 Atlantic Highway, Edgecomb.

Applications being taken for Christmas toy distribution

The Salvation Army will accept applications on Oct. 20 for parents who wish to receive toys for their children this Christmas.

Children ages 13-18 are eligible to receive a gift, supplied by the Bruce Roberts Fund, when parents fill out a form, including the child’s birthday, along with a three-paragraph, handwritten statement of need.

Each applicant must also have the following: photo ID for applicant, proof of current physical address, ID for everyone in the household which includes proof of age and knowledge of household income and expense for all members of the household for inclusion on the budget section of the application.

Only one application will be accepted for each household. The applicant must be 18 years of age or older, a head of the household and may only request assistance for people who permanently reside in the home.

Do not bring children since this can be a lengthy process and the facility is not set up for child care.

Distribution dates for those who complete the application process will be given at the conclusion of the interview.

Applications also are available for food items for a Christmas Day meal and toys for appropriate ages.

In order to receive assistance from the Old Orchard Beach Salvation Army, applicants must live in the service area that includes Old Orchard Beach, Saco, Biddeford, Dayton and Arundel.

Those applications will be received from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m., 12:30 to 2 p.m. and from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Oct. 20 at 2 Sixth St.
