A 2-year-old boy died Monday after a tractor driven by his grandfather accidentally backed over him in Burnham, police said.

Raymond Rayeski Sr., 54, was watching his grandson, Raymond Rayeski III, at the man’s home in Burnham, according to a news release from Steve McCausland, spokesman for Maine Department of Public Safety. The pair were outside in the late morning around a woodpile and both were on the tractor at one point, but the boy got off to play, McCausland said.

Meanwhile, Rayeski continued to use the tractor, cleaning up and dumping debris.

“It appears the boy then ran after the grandfather on the tractor, who was backing up and did not see the boy,” McCausland said in the release.

Rayeski drove his grandson to Sebasticook Valley Hospital in Pittsfield, where the child died.

“Detectives termed the death a tragic accident,” McCausland said.
