A Portland couple who police say fired a flare gun in a dispute with three men Thursday in North Deering face weapons charges.

Ezra LeBlanc-Simpson, 32, and Rachel Smith, 27, are charged criminal threatening with a dangerous weapon and reckless conduct with a dangerous weapon, said Assistant Police Chief Vern Malloch in a press release. LeBlanc-Simpson faces an additional charge of violating bail conditions.

Three men from Lewiston were in Portland to return a car to Smith, police said, and LeBlanc-Simpson got angry and fired a flare gun at the men as they walked on Allen Avenue about 2:15 p.m.

The flare missed the men, and Smith and LeBlanc-Simpson drove away, pointing what appeared to be a handgun at the men, police said.

Police found the couple about 30 minutes later in the parking lot of the North Gate Shopping Center. They were driving a different vehicle, and armed with a flare gun and a pellet gun that looked like a handgun, police said.

LeBlanc-Simpson had been free on bail after being charged with aggravated assault in connection with an assault on Smith in September, police said.

There were no injuries or property damage in Thursday’s incident.
