The Oct. 16 editorial supporting Question 5 (Oct. 16) raises a question: It refers to “a proposal to introduce ranked-choice voting in primaries.” Yet I have understood that the present, closed primary system would still be used in Maine.

If open primaries were included in the proposal, I would be a supporter. If, however, the change is only to be implemented in the general election, I remain strenuously opposed.

If we have learned anything from the absurd primaries of the 2016 election cycle, it is how thoroughly the organizers of the major political factions will struggle to maintain control of the electoral process.

The concept of ranked-choice voting promoting civility ignores the salacious appeal of attack ad sound bites. The only remedy is a concerted pledge by voters to reject candidates who attack their opponents and fail to tell what they will actually do in office.
