A Milford man has been sentenced to 10 years in federal prison for conspiring to distribute bath salts and being a felon in possession of firearms.

Edwin Hamel, 60, was sentenced Thursday in U.S. District Court in Bangor by Judge John A. Woodcock Jr. Hamel was also sentenced to three years of supervised release.

According to court records, Hamel pleaded guilty in November 2015 to buying bath salts – a synthetic hallucinogenic drug – from China via the internet, paying for them with wire transfers and having them shipped to the U.S., where he repackaged them and sold them in Penobscot Country.

He also acquired two rifles in exchange for some of the bath salts. Because Hamel had a prior felony marijuana trafficking conviction, he was prohibited from possessing guns.
