Thursday’s Page 1 Portland Press Herald headline read “GOP claims mandate for president-elect.” Let us be perfectly clear here: This was no mandate. Fact: Hillary Clinton won the popular vote. That is a mandate.

The Electoral College failed us once again. As in 2000, when Al Gore won the popular vote, more people in this country voted for Hillary Clinton on Nov. 8 than voted for her opponent. The electoral process has failed the wishes of the people once again, and it has put Donald Trump in office.

It is clearly time for the Electoral College to be replaced with the popular vote so that every vote truly does count. We are now facing four years with a president who had the lowest popularity polling numbers of any candidate in history, including Hillary Clinton. Good luck to us all.
