Despite a chilly rain, a crowd gathered in downtown Portland on Friday evening for the city’s annual tree lighting in Monument Square.

The program included a giant inflatable snow globe, music by children’s singer-songwriter Rick Charette and an appearance by Santa Claus, as well as free horse-and-wagon rides.

Portland marks the start of its holiday season each year with the tree lighting. This year’s tree, a 40-foot blue spruce, was donated by Barbara Ripley, who planted the tree with her husband 30 years ago in front of their home in Portland’s Riverton neighborhood.
