For generations Deering Lumber, Inc., located in Biddeford, and Rufus Deering Lumber Co., located in Portland, have been friendly local competitors. Both building supply companies started in the Civil War era, and, though not related in any way, are often thought to be.

Rufus Deering was founded on the Portland waterfront in 1854. Twelve years later, in 1866, Deering Lumber began as a sawmill in Biddeford near the head of tide on the Saco River.

Over the course of time, Deering Lumber in Biddeford expanded its building supply operations to include locations in Kennebunk and Springvale. Deering Lumber is proud to be celebrating its 150th anniversary in business this year.

Congratulations to Rufus Deering Lumber for 162 years in business; we are saddened to see the venerable Commercial Street business go. Deering Lumber offers heartfelt best wishes for a smooth and successful transition to the owners and employees of both Rufus Deering and Eldredge Lumber.
