I am concerned about the proposed repeal of the Affordable Care Act and the weakening of Medicare by forcing people into private plans. My wife is insured under the ACA, and, as a senior citizen, I am covered by Medicare.

Providing for the health and well-being of America’s citizens is a cornerstone of a strong democracy. The benefits of affordable health insurance are particularly important in Maine, the state with the nation’s oldest population. The ACA provides health insurance to 80,000 Mainers, and Medicare insures over 300,000 people in our state.

The erosion or loss of either the ACA or Medicare would have an immediate, significant and detrimental effect on the health of Maine’s citizens. Furthermore, the ACA has improved the outlook for Medicare’s financing.

Our elected representatives in Washington should resist any attempts by Congress to repeal or weaken the ACA and to privatize or weaken Medicare and its promise of guaranteed coverage for the elderly.
