Re: “Trump win traumatizes Portland progressives” (Nov. 27), I found Rep. Lawrence Lockman’s description of Donald Trump’s election as a “middle finger from the country class to the ruling class” to be very apt. (Having never heard the term “country class” before, my first thought was a teacher testing students over the evolution of Hank Williams Sr. to Jason Aldean.)

Obviously, Rep. Lockman and I have different opinions on just what a “middle finger” represents. I think of it as an adolescent, impulsive act of passive aggression. Nothing to be proud of. Something that one usually feels a bit of shame for later.

Unless feeling genuine shame for crude behavior is now considered political correctness run amok?

I’ve never seen a middle finger thrown up that made things better. Sure, maybe the gesture provides a moment of shallow satisfaction, but nothing is ever really resolved – and not only that, things could escalate and actually get substantially worse.

Sums up the impending Trump presidency perfectly.
