Baby-sitting for shoppers

The Old Orchard Beach United Methodist Church will offer two more pre-holiday baby-sitting services for parents who want to shop without the kids or enjoy an evening out.

Children can be dropped off after 6 p.m. and picked up by 11 p.m. Friday and again Dec. 16 at the church, located at Washington and Fountain avenues.

The suggested donation is $10 per child, no matter how long the child stays. Please leave a message at 934-5553 with any questions and someone will call you back. No reservations required.

The church will provide two supervising adults at all times, board games and a movie at 8 p.m. Parents supply snacks, drinks, diapers, blankies or other comfort items.

Neighborhood Watch meet

A Neighborhood Watch meeting is planned for 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the Old Orchard Beach Police Department Community Room.

These meetings are open to all residents of Old Orchard Beach and Ocean Park.

Christmas pony rides

Children are invited to come meet Santa and enjoy a Christmas pony ride from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at LaDawn Quarter Horses Therapeutic Riding Center, 995 Goodwins Mills Road.

AARP Smart Driver course

An AARP Smart Driver seminar, sponsored by the AARP and Lincoln County TRIAD, will be offered from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at Spectrum Generations Coastal Community Center, 521 Main St.

Instructor Joyce Polyniak will teach a driver refresher course designed to meet the needs of older drivers.

Class size is limited to the first 15 community members (age 50 and above) who register. Cost is $15 for AARP members with AARP cards and $20 for all others. Participants who successfully complete the course are eligible for a reduction in automobile insurance premiums.

‘Money Smart’ workshop

A “Money Smart” workshop, offering fraud protection and other tips for older adults, will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at Spectrum Generations Coastal Community Center, 521 Main St.

Bath Savings Bank vice president Patricia Lane, and branch managers, will provide information and tips to help prevent common frauds, scams and other types of elder financial exploitation in the community, especially during the holiday season.

History center Christmas

“Keeping Christmas: A 19th-Century Winter Celebration” will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Washburn-Norlands Living History Center, 290 Norlands Road.

The event also will include a cookie walk fundraiser to benefit the new barn, a quilt raffle and live, period music on the lute, played by Neil Adam James. There will be a horse-drawn sleigh ride and a tour of the decorated 1867 mansion.

Read to Tail Waggin’ Tutor

Jack, a Tail Waggin’ Tutor, returns to the Kennebunk Free Library from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday to listen to children read.

Children of all ages and abilities are encouraged to sit with Jack and read to a nonjudgmental listener. Reading to a dog has been shown to help students increase reading proficiency.

Jack is a certified therapy dog, and will be accompanied by his humans, Ursula and Kate Roese. He also volunteers at the Kennebunk Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

No preregistration is needed. The program is free, wheelchair accessible, and open to all. The library is located at 112 Main St.

Lecture on reading water

Sebago Chapter of Trout Unlimited will meet at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church, 43 Foreside Road, Route 88, just north of its intersection with Route 1.

Certified casting instructor, Maine Guide and Beans Discovery School instructor Kate Farnham will speak on how to read water using examples from her home waters: the East Outlet and the Moosehead region. The meeting is open to the public.

Historical Society events

The Thomaston Historical Society will host its 10th anniversary of Home for the Holidays event this weekend, featuring one of the town’s antique homes: the Dr. and Mrs. William Colvin home at 225 Main St.

The home will host an open house from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, featuring a wine reception, live music, a live auction with auctioneer Bruce Gamage, and a silent auction. The event continues Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Bids for the silent auction end at 2:30 p.m.

The Kittery Recreation Department will sponsor a STAR Theatre Free lecture series “Images of America: Kittery – A Historic Journey Through Pictures” at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Kittery Community Center, 120 Rogers Road.

Images of America is a series of photographic history books published by Arcadia Publishing. One of the newest additions to the collection is “Kittery” by Andrea F. Donaghue. In this presentation, there will be a slideshow of photographs from the book.

Santa Claus will stop in for breakfast from 7:30 to 9:30 a.m. Friday at York Hospital on Loving Kindness Way.

Grange hosting events

Saco Grange No. 53, 168 North St., will host the following events this week:

On Friday and Saturday, a “3 one-act Christmas Plays & Sing-a-long” production, headed by student-directed Showcase of Saco will be held from 6 to 7:30 p.m.

Library Christmas sale

Wiscasset Library will host a Christmas sale from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at its 21 High St. location, featuring a variety of donated items for sale including handmade and costume jewelry, original paintings, prints, ceramics, antique collectibles and books.

Volunteers will guide little ones through Santa’s Workshop and help them select inexpensive holiday gifts for their parents and other family members. Be sure to have the children bring their spending money.

While the children shop, adults will search for gifts in another area. Volunteers will wrap all presents for free.

Speaker Kerck Kelsey will lead the program “Wilson’s Invincibles: The Most Successful Union Cavalry in the Civil War.”
