In the early morning hours of Nov. 27, many lives were changed by the actions of Norman J. Strobel, a man determined to make his former partner suffer for leaving him. The tragic shootings have profoundly affected many lives.
Acts of violence happen every day in our neighborhoods and communities; however, they are often concealed behind closed doors or the threats of something worse.
While we may not see these acts of violence daily, Family Crisis Services, the domestic violence resource center serving Cumberland County, meets individuals daily who share their experiences of physical and sexual assault, stalking behaviors, threats to harm them and/or their children, and emotional and verbal violence.
A determined perpetrator may be difficult to dissuade, even when the appropriate measures are taken. This is why high-risk case assessment is critically important.
Domestic violence perpetrators engage in a cyclical pattern of crimes and tactics, so cases against them cannot be treated as separate, unrelated incidents. A coordinated community response is absolutely necessary to keep victims safe while holding perpetrators accountable.
The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office responds to hundreds of domestic violence-related calls each year. The general public may not recognize that domestic violence calls are among the most dangerous for law enforcement. Officers, deputies and state troopers work to protect others, knowing they are placing themselves in harm’s way.
Family Crisis Services would like to thank the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office for its diligence on this case and for its attentiveness to the many other domestic violence cases that it responds to each year.
Thank you for your ongoing dedication to keeping victims/survivors of domestic violence safe and holding perpetrators of such crimes accountable. Our community is a safer place when we stand together as partners on the issue of domestic violence.
With deep gratitude,
Jen LaChance
