Djokovic decides to split from coach Boris Becker

Novak Djokovic said he and his coach, Boris Becker, are splitting up after three seasons together.

Djokovic posted a statement Tuesday on Facebook saying they “jointly decided to end our cooperation.”

Of Djokovic’s 12 career Grand Slam singles titles – trailing only Roger Federer with 17, and Pete Sampras and Rafael Nadal with 14 apiece – six came while working with Becker.

GIRLS’ HOCKEY: Courtney Sullivan had two goals and an assist for Greely (3-1), which opened a 6-0 first-period lead and beat Mt. Ararat/Morse (0-5) 10-0 at the Family Ice Center in Falmouth.

Bella Goodwin had a pair of goals for the Rangers, while Ellie Schad, Danielle Holt and Mollie Horton each contributed a goal and an assist.

Lily Schenk stopped 29 shots for Mt. Ararat/Morse.

NEW SPORTS: Cheerleading and Thai kickboxing have made their way into the Olympic movement.

The International Cheer Union and the International Federation of Muay Thai received provisional recognition from the IOC executive board – a first step on a long road to becoming a future Olympic sport.

ROAD RACING

AMERICAN RECORD: Shalane Flanagan’s victory in the Boston Athletic Association 10K has been ratified as an American record by USA Track & Field.

Flanagan completed the 6.2-mile course through Boston’s Back Bay this summer in 30 minutes, 52 seconds. That’s 11 seconds faster than the U.S. record she set in The Netherlands the previous September and 12 seconds better than the course record that had been set by Mamitu Daska of Ethiopia in 2014.

BOXING

HALL OF FAME: Former heavyweight champion Evander Holyfield and three-division champion Marco Antonio Barrera of Mexico head a list of nine people selected for induction into the International Boxing Hall of Fame.

Also to be inducted June 11 in Canastota, New York, are super flyweight champion Johnny Tapia; Australian trainer Johnny Lewis; judge Jerry Roth; journalist-broadcaster Steve Farhood; broadcaster Barry Tompkins; and posthumous honorees Eddie Booker and ring announcer Jimmy Lennon Sr.

SOCCER

MLS: David Villa earned the Most Valuable Player award after scoring 23 goals for New York City in his second season with the team.

Villa got an average of 25.9 percent of the vote in balloting by players, club officials and media. Bradley Wright-Phillips of the New York Red Bulls was second at 19.3 percent, followed by Red Bulls midfielder Sacha Kljestan (17.6), Toronto forward Sebastian Giovinco (16.3) and Montreal midfielder Ignacio Piatti (7.7).

GOLF

RYDER CUP: Thomas Bjorn became the first Scandinavian to be appointed captain of Europe’s team.

The 45-year-old Dane will lead the team against the United States in 2018 in Paris after being chosen by a five-man panel, including Europe’s past three captains.
