PORTLAND – Designed by John Calvin Stevens, built in 1895 in a Deering neighborhood then known as Fessenden Park, and first owned by prosperous grocer Edwin A. Rogers, this property on the edge of the USM campus has seen its systems updated and upgraded, and its original features beautifully and faithfully restored to flawless condition.

The Queen Anne design of the “Clifford House,” as it is known after its owners during the 1920s, is praised in the invaluable Greater Portland Landmarks book “Deering: A Social and Architectural History”:

“A dwelling of amazing picturesque ingenuity in terms of plan, variation of materials, and unexpected flourishes.”

Continuing, the authors remark on the building’s freedom from “picayune symmetry.” And thanks in part to this quality, the interior’s transformation into three condominium homes – two of which are now offered for sale – seems entirely natural.

The larger unit, at 3,133 square feet, rises from a grand, paneled entrance to a main-living second floor and a three-bedroom top story that includes a stunning master suite.

“The corner tower distinguished houses of this period,” note the Deering authors; and here the tower rooms are devoted to an octagonal dining room, and a gorgeous master bath. But surely the condominium’s most intriguing feature, even more than its inlay floors and tile fireplaces, is its skylight, which is part of the third floor, and which you can stand on.

Also being offered is a smaller (1,311 square feet) but equally distinctive unit, No. 2, a two-bedroom home that also has gorgeous woodwork, and two fireplaces. All three units have private entrances.

The condominums at 29 Falmouth St., Portland, are listed for sale at $475,000 (Unit 3) and $349,500 (Unit 2) by John Hatcher of Keller Williams Realty, and are being shown by appointment.

Taxes on the homes are $7,672 and $5,284 (2015) respectively. Please note that the monthly condominium fees ($693 and $313) include heat.
