A Harmony man who was injured in a car crash Friday and was taken by LifeFlight helicopter to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor has died, according to police.

Sheldon L. Woodard, 76, was injured after veering off Guilford Road in Cambridge on Friday morning. He was thrown through the window of his 2002 Oldsmobile Bravada SUV, suffering head and possible internal injuries.

A passing motorist found Woodard lying in the road, according to a Somerset County Sheriff’s Office statement. Sheriff’s deputies were called to the scene at 8:21 a.m.

Woodard’s vehicle had skidded across the road and hit a curb, rolling over several times. Police said snow and slippery roads appeared to be a factor in the crash, as well as excessive speed. Police also believe Woodard was not wearing a seatbelt.

The Morning Sentinel previously wrote about Woodard in January 2012, when there was a fire in the garage next to his home. Woodard was working on the exhaust system of a car when it caught on fire and then sparked the oxygen cylinder, exploding and blowing the roof off the garage. He was saved from the fire by family friend Stacy Gourley at the time, but suffered burns on the side of his face.

Inside the garage were his lifelong collection of tools, two cars, two four-wheelers, a plow truck and a 1950 tractor.

The loss of the garage’s contents hurt the most, he said. Woodard served in the Army and worked as a mechanic in Dexter. He also worked for Hardwood Products Co. in Guilford for 33 years.
