A family in southern Maine is feeling fortunate to celebrate Christmas in their own home. But an especially difficult year has left them unable to buy gifts for their children, and they’re asking for help.
“We lost income over the summer when my husband’s work hours were cut. We then lost our place to live and were homeless all summer. We were lucky enough to have friends that took us in to live in tents on their property. We ended up losing most of our belongings in the process.
“We finally found a new place to live about a month and half ago, and since then have been strapped financially. Any help this holiday season would be greatly appreciated.”
The Portland Press Herald Toy Fund in the Spirit of Bruce Roberts is using donations from readers to provide toys to thousands of Maine children who might otherwise not receive holiday gifts because of hardships faced by their parents.
The fund – now in its 67th year – is accepting applications for toys from needy families in Cumberland, York, Sagadahoc, Lincoln and Knox counties.

Donations to help buy the toys can be made on the website or by writing checks to the Portland Press Herald Toy Fund and mailing them to the fund at P.O. Box 7310, Portland, ME 04112.
