Thousands of children are about to experience the joy of Christmas because of the Portland Press Herald Toy Fund.

And, through their gifts to support the fund, a lot of other kids already have.

Twelve-year-old Alec Tippie got into the spirit of the holiday when, for the third year in a row, he asked friends to bring donations instead of presents to his birthday party. He donated $150.

Nine-year-old Ian Watters experienced some Christmas magic when he sent in a donation for $25.

The students at Greely Middle School have been getting into the spirit this month during the annual schoolwide penny drive organized by Mr. Brookes’ fifth-grade class. This year, the total was $1,351.60.

The pre-schoolers at Tender Years Learning Center in North Yarmouth donated $120 after learning to do chores to raise money.

And at Brown School in South Portland, the fifth-grade fundraising project led to a huge donation this year – $1,045.

The Portland Press Herald Toy Fund in the Spirit of Bruce Roberts is using donations from readers to provide toys to thousands of Maine children who might otherwise not receive holiday gifts because of hardships faced by their parents.

The fund – now in its 67th year – serves needy families in Cumberland, York, Sagadahoc, Lincoln and Knox counties.

Donations to help buy the toys can be made on the website or by writing checks to the Portland Press Herald Toy Fund and mailing them to the fund at P.O. Box 7310, Portland, ME 04112.
