Westbrook police issued a warning for people to stay off the ice of the Presumpscot River after two teenage girls fell through it Sunday afternoon.

An emergency dispatcher said police received a 911 call around 12:57 p.m. from a person who said two girls had fallen through the ice near Riverbank Park in Westbrook. Police officers and firefighters responded to the 911 call. The girls were not injured.

“Fortunately, the girls were close to shore and the area where they broke through was shallow,” Westbrook police wrote in a message posted on the department’s Facebook page. “We want to remind everyone the ice on the Presumpscot River is not safe and too thin to walk on. Please stay dry, warm and off the ice.”
